Build a campaign with the wizard

Answer seven short questions to turn one of the ready-made banner designs into a running campaign, with your own words and link, without opening the editor.

The campaign wizard makes a campaign for you from a few questions. It starts from one of the ready-made banner designs, takes your own words and link in plain boxes rather than on a canvas, and asks who sends the banner, when and where it goes. The banner on the right redraws as you answer. Nothing is created until the last step, and what it creates is an ordinary campaign: everything in it can still be changed in the campaign editor.

Footer365 makes the campaign wizard available to organisations gradually, so it may not be in your portal yet. See Early access pages and features. Without it, New campaign opens the campaign editor, as described in Create a banner campaign.

Start the wizard

  1. In the portal, go to Signatures and then Campaigns (open Campaigns).
  2. Select New campaign.

The arrow beside New campaign lists the other ways in: Build with the wizard, Start blank in the editor, and the layouts and Browse all designs under Start from, which open the campaign editor on a design.

The seven steps

The steps are listed down the left. Select a step you have already reached to go back to it, or use Back. Every step has a tip beside the banner, and Dark above it shows the banner on a dark email background.

  1. Ready check. A banner only appears in the signatures of the people a signature rule covers, and only where their template has room for it: a Campaign element. This step lists your signature rules that are switched on, each marked Ready when its template has room, or Needs room when it does not. For a template that needs room, Add it for me adds a Campaign element in a row of its own at the bottom of the template, above any disclaimer, and saves it as a new version of the template. Where your organisation requires changes to be approved, the change is sent for approval instead, and the rule is marked Waiting for approval until it is approved. Add it for me is offered when your role can change templates and the template was built in the editor; otherwise add the element in the template editor, as described in Create a banner campaign. If no signature rule is switched on yet, select Make a rule first. A rule gives a template, so if no template is switched on either, the step says so and offers Make one with the template wizard instead, or Go to Templates where the template wizard is not in your portal: make a template and switch it on, then the rule, then come back to the campaign.
  2. What it is for. Choose the closest purpose: General, Events, Webinars, Hiring, Awards, Reviews, Closures and notices, Launches or Resources.
  3. Pick a design. The designs made for that purpose, each with a preview. They start on your default brand kit, when you have one, as they do in the editor. Image and button and New product show a picture of your own, which the wizard does not ask for, so they offer Open in the full editor instead.
  4. Your words and link. Type the headline, the line under it if the design has one, the button or link text, and where the link goes, starting https://. The design's own words are shown greyed in each box as an example. A line under the headline left empty is taken out of the banner. Under the boxes, the wizard checks that the banner has your own address rather than the design's example one, and shows the description people see when images are turned off, made from your words.
  5. Who and when. Tick the signature rules whose people send the banner; the rules with room for it are ticked to begin with, or every rule when none has room yet. Choose who receives it: Everyone they email, or Only people outside your organisation. Choose when it starts, Now, Tomorrow 9:00 or Pick a date, and when it ends, In a week, In a month, Pick a date or No end. A campaign ends at 23:59 on its last day. Times are in your own time zone, which the step names.
  6. Where it goes. In the signature, or Above the message, at the top of the email. A design taller than the 120 pixels a banner above the message can be is not offered there. Then choose Which messages carry it; the choice follows where it goes until you pick for yourself, as in the editor. See Where it goes.
  7. Check and start. The Campaign name starts as your headline; change it if you like. Each campaign needs a different name, and the wizard says so when one is taken. A summary repeats your answers. Choose Start it now to save it as Scheduled, so it goes out from its start time, or Save as a draft to save it without sending anything, and select Start the campaign or Save the draft.

The wizard then draws the banner as one image, as the campaign editor does when you save, and saves the campaign with the editor's own checks, including the check of every link with Google Web Risk. If anything is refused, the campaign editor opens with your answers and says why. Otherwise you are taken back to Campaigns, with the new campaign in the list.

Clicks on the banner's link are counted, unless your organisation has switched click counting off.

Open the full editor

Open the full editor instead, on every step, and More options in the full editor on the last, open the campaign editor on a new campaign filled in with your answers so far: the name, the banner, the rules, the dates, who receives it, where it goes and which messages. Nothing is saved until you select Save there. The editor has the settings the wizard leaves out, such as a schedule by day of the week, exceptions, an A/B test, website analytics tagging and the opt-out link. See Create a banner campaign and Schedule and target a campaign.

To stop at any point, select Close, then Leave in Leave the wizard?. Nothing has been created, so your answers are lost. A Campaign element already added to a template with Add it for me stays in the template.

Good to know

  • Someone limited to a scope is offered only the rules aimed wholly inside it, as in the editor. See Limit an administrator to part of the organisation.
  • A new campaign goes into the folder the Campaigns list was showing, as one made in the editor does. See Folders and who can use them.
  • Adding a Campaign element with Add it for me is recorded in the audit log, as any change to a template is.
