The portal says "Action needed: reconnect Footer365 to Microsoft 365"
What the red reconnect banner means, what caused it, what still works in the meantime, and how a Global Administrator fixes it in about two minutes.
The banner reads Action needed: reconnect Footer365 to Microsoft 365. It means Footer365 no longer has the approval it was given in your Microsoft 365 organisation, so it can no longer read your directory. It appears on every page of the portal until the approval is given again. Your technical contact is also sent an email about it.
What caused it
Footer365 lost its admin consent. In practice that is one of these:
- Someone removed Footer365 from Enterprise applications in the Microsoft Entra admin centre, perhaps while tidying up apps they did not recognise.
- Someone revoked the permissions that were granted to Footer365, in the same place.
Either can be done by anyone in your organisation with the right admin role. Your Microsoft Entra audit logs show who made the change and when, if you need to know.
What still works, and what does not
Your email is not affected. With mail flow, mail keeps flowing through Footer365 and is delivered as normal. With the Outlook add-in only, mail is sent as normal too, but the add-in signs people in with the Footer365 app, so if the app was removed it can fail to, and then messages are sent without a signature.
For now, signatures are still added, using everyone's details as they were at the last successful sync. What stops straight away is anything that needs to read Microsoft 365:
- New starters, leavers and changed job titles or phone numbers are not picked up.
- New shared mailboxes and groups are not picked up.
- Changes to your email domains are not picked up.
Do not leave it for long. Footer365 re-reads your email domains every night, and with mail flow it only signs mail from domains it has confirmed within the last seven days. Without consent it cannot confirm them, so after about a week signatures stop being added to anyone's mail. Mail is still delivered, just without signatures.
How to fix it
You need a Microsoft 365 Global Administrator. It takes about two minutes and there is no Exchange work to do.
The administrator must be able to sign in to the Footer365 portal. While consent is missing, Footer365 cannot ask Microsoft 365 who your Global Administrators are, so the setup wizard only opens for people who already have portal access. If your Global Administrator does not, give them access first under Access, then Users. Give colleagues access
- In the portal, select Re-grant admin consent on the banner. This opens the Footer365 setup wizard.
- Sign in with the Global Administrator account if asked.
- At Grant directory access, select Continue to Microsoft.
- Check the permissions on Microsoft's screen and select Accept. You are brought back to the wizard.
- Once the wizard shows the step as complete, go to Directory, then Users and groups in the portal and select Sync now to catch up on any changes missed while disconnected.
The banner goes once the consent has been confirmed with Microsoft.
If the wizard says Microsoft has not confirmed it
If you see Microsoft has not yet confirmed the access you granted. This usually settles within a minute. Please wait a moment, then use the button below again., wait a minute and select Continue to Microsoft again. Microsoft takes a short while to make a new approval visible, particularly if the app had been removed entirely.
If Footer365 had been removed from Enterprise applications
Removing the app also removes the Exchange Administrator role that was assigned to it, which Footer365 uses to look after its connectors and rules in Exchange Online. If your organisation uses the Outlook add-in only, there was no role, and there is nothing more to do. With mail flow, after re-granting consent, check the role is back:
- Open the Microsoft Entra admin centre and go to Roles and administrators.
- Select Exchange Administrator and check that Footer365 is listed.
- If it is not, select Add assignments, search for Footer365, select it and click Add.
Granting the Exchange Administrator role
Stopping it happening again
Let whoever manages your Enterprise applications know that Footer365 is in use, so it is not removed as an unrecognised app. If you do want to stop using Footer365, follow Removing Footer365 instead, which also takes it out of your mail flow properly.
